THE SPIRULINA PROJECT
Today there are more than 900 Millions individuals affected by food scarcity, or in a state of extreme poverty.

1/10 of them (about 90 Millions) are not only poor but victims of large food crisis and emergencies, and depend on the international food aid, mostly provided by the WFP (United Nations World Food Programme), the leading UN Humanitarian Agency or by the European Union, the Red Cross and by other International and National Humanitarian Agencies, including NGOs.

1/10 of the aforesaid emergency victims (about 9 Millions), especially children, are in a state of severe malnutrition. They are agonizing, they cannot digest ordinary food aid and they are the poorest of the poor. Restoring the health of these malnourished victims is the objective of the CISRI-ISP Spirulina Program, the CISRI most important affiliated institution, composed of experts, researchers and other members of staff, with the aim to promote studies, research and initiatives for the humanitarian utilization of micro-alga spirulina as food for populations in need.

In order to provide rehabilitative aid in favour of food emergency victims and to allow them to survive (and then to be capable to accept ordinary food aid), the CISRI-ISP Spirulina Program has designed and engineered a low cost Food Micro-algae Production Pond, which can be adapted to Regional, Sub Regional, or National scale. This capability is due to its reproducibility, being based on a modular one hectare food micro-algae production pond (100mx100m), in concrete covered by food grade geo-membrane, installed with the following scheme: 8 interconnected raceways, 8 modular stirrers of 12 hp (horse power) each, 16 deflectors,1 connecting intersection , as follows:

Preliminary to the realization of National scaled One-hectare production pond, capable to produce 10.000 (ten thousand) emergency doses a day at very low cost, the CISRI-ISP Spirulina Program, has appointed a number of Field Commissioner which were already active on the territory to enhance food -security though their respective Projects in Africa, al based on micro-algae, with the capacity to affiliate their programs to the organization. As a result of this broad network, a large number of local projects may be run directly on field.
